Trendsetting Boomers
Teenagers get a lot of credit (or blame) for being trendsetters. We look at them sporting their funny haircuts and baggy pants and wonder why they canât simply fit in to the ânorm.â Why do they always have to go against the grain? They do things that we never would have dreamed of doing. (Of course, when we were teenagers, some of us did things our parents never would have dreamed of doing, and our parents did things their parents never would have dreamed of doing. But thatâs beside the point.)
When it comes to setting trends, though, I am convinced that the worldâs designers and stylists are overlooking an important group who are breaking new ground in the world of fashion every day. What group is this? The over-fifty crowd, of course.
Think about itâwhen is the last time you saw a fashion show featuring middle-aged-and-beyond models? You never hear about our âhipness.â You donât see us featured on the covers of fashion magazines or modeling on the runways of New York and Paris.
Yet if you sat on a bench at any local mall and watched a few of us parade by, you couldnât help but notice that our age group is a trendsetting force to be reckoned with (our fashion faux pas notwithstanding).
So why are fashion designers all but ignoring us?
I believe it is a case of job security for the twenty-something models, and perhaps even a little jealousy thrown into the mix.
If we start getting the attention we deserve and begin calling the shots regarding whatâs hot and whatâs not, what will become of the fashionistas of today? Theyâll lose their power, their influence, and their mega salaries. AARP will start casting Project Runway. Thatâs why the youth-driven fashion world likes things just the way they are.
But these designers are missing out on a bonanza of new styles and trends. Those of us over fifty have had a jump on the fashion world for years. And itâs not just a replacement hip Iâm talking about, either.
No one is paying attention to our styles, though. That is, until some nineteen-year-old dons the exact same outfit, and then all of a sudden itâs the newest fad.
Come on, Fifth Avenue, we had the styles first! Baggy pants?
Grandpas have been wearing those for generations. Multicolored hair? Some senior women have been dying their hair blue for as long as I can remember. Multiple body piercings? We were the first with these, too. Whatâs a new pacemaker and weekly B-12 shots if not body piercings?
Itâs clear to me that we, the boomer generation, are the ones setting the trends. Yet our styles are being stolen right out from under us, without even a percentage offered!
Now the question is, what are we going to do about it? How can we stop todayâs fashion industry from undermining our creativity and taking what is rightfully ours?
I say, plenty! We can write letters to these fashion moguls and tell them weâre not going
